BENEFITS OF MASSAGE AND BODY WORK
In this fast paced world and economy that we live in we often don’t take time to think about the many stresses that we put upon our bodies. Emotionally, physically, and nutritionally that put our health at risk. Massage is being utilized by a wide array of people, from those seeking relaxation and reduction of stress to athletes recovering from injuries or utilizing its benefits in reducing muscle soreness and lactic acid build-up so they spend less time recovering and more time “in the game”. The elderly benefit from healing touch and maintaining range of motion in their joints. Those suffering from chronic pain from arthritis or other degenerative disorders turn to massage as an alternative to surgery. Pregnant woman utilize massage to ease the discomfort of pregnancy and to aid in a much smoother delivery. Cancer patients use massage to help reduce the effects of their treatments.
Massage has many therapeutic benefits and over the coming months I will discuss each one in more detail. I have compiled a list of some benefits and effects of massage on bodily functions.
Physical - Enhances tissue repair and facilitates healthy scar formation Improves connective tissue health Breaks up adhesions formed my past injury or surgery
Skeletal - Promotes good joint function and free range of motion Promotes optimal joint flexibility Promotes proper skeletal alignment
Muscular - Releases “Trigger points” (Trigger points are areas of a muscle that are hyperactive and are in spasm due to Repetitive movements and injury) Removes metabolic waste from muscles
Cardiovascular - Reduces blood pressure and heart rate
Lymphatic - Increases lymph fluid movement. Improves immune function via stress reduction
