Old Avon Village in the News

Hartford Courant - April 10, 2008

Hot Heaven Pizzeria
33 E. Main St. (Route 44), Avon
860 470-0257

When it comes to pizza, there are two kinds of people: those who love a thin-crust pie, and those who don't.

If you're one of the former, expect a celestial experience at Hot Heaven, a new eatery in the Old Avon Village shopping complex.

The tiny spot serves up a menu of interesting salads, paninis and sandwiches and extra-thin-crust pizzas with gourmet toppings.

The specialty section on the menu include a wide selection of white pizzas, including a blackened scallop with roasted garlic and gorgonzola cheese; honey-roasted chicken with fresh ricotta, goat cheese and baby spinach; and our favorite, a shrimp, garlic, artichoke and feta combination.

"Red" possibilities include the Garden Pizza, piled with so many veggies it's practically health food, and one of the most unusual choices we've seen, a Cajun chicken pie with roasted tomatoes, burnt onions, jalapeño peppers and roasted garlic, topped with a bourbon BBQ glaze.

The tangy pear gorgonzola salad is a mix of greens tossed with carmelized onions, candied walnuts, pear slices and crumbles of tangy cheese.

Cranberry spinach salad, a meal in itself, features maple-glazed chicken on a bed of baby spinach with sun-dried tomatoes and toasted sesame seeds.

If you're looking for a great sandwich, try the prime rib panini with beef, blue cheese, roasted red peppers, wasabi and crème fraiche on a grilled French baguette.

Hours are Monday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m

All that glitters is not unique, unless it is made by the Gem Factory
by Natalie K. Pollock

Kevin Leone thought he would open his first jewelry store in Bristol, but his plans did not work out that way. After looking around the perfect location, he found an empty space fronting Route 44 in Old Avon Village and is happy with the turn his life has taken.

"Because my pieces are custom made, they attract customers in this market. People here are looking for unique and different pieces, something that cannot be found in the other stores in the area," he said.

Mr. Leone grew up in Bristol and did not know the Farmington Valley well until he began searching for a business location. He spent two years working with Bristol planning and zoning officials and became so frustrated that he eventually gave up on consolidating his studio with a shop near his home.

"There were too many problems with the planning and zoning people in Bristol. After two years of working with them, they told me I had to tear up my parking lot because they decided I needed drainage. They also wanted me to change my windows." More >>

Old Avon buildings to be reincarnated - Three of the oldest buildings in Avon, built around 1840, will soon get new life as a combined retail space.

Ann August, manager of the family-owned Old Avon Village shopping district on Route 44, says the three old-style buildings will be converted into one structure, and a single roof will be put over the top, to create a 4,500-square-foot retail space. Until recently, the buildings housed a gift shop, a jeweler, a coin collector shop, a candy store and a home decor store. Those stores have relocated, either within the center, or elsewhere. more>>

The familiar big rocking chair in Old Avon Village has enjoyed an interesting life. One of the most familiar directions given to anyone who decides to shop in Avon is to "look for the big rocking chair." Whether you then turn right into the Old Avon Village shopping center turn left into the strip of shops opposite it, or go past it, you have to wonder why anyone would build a nine-foot-high rocking chair. more>>
